Periodontal Scaling and Root Planning

Periodontal scaling and root planning is a non-surgical procedure to treat periodontal disease. The dentist or dental hygienist with numb the gums and teeth roots with a local anesthetic before starting the procedure.

Scaling - A specialized tool is used to remove the plaque build-up from the teeth above and below the gum line.

Root Planning - The rough spots on the roots of the teeth are smoothed down. This reduces any irregularities which may promote decay.

This procedure can be completed in a single visit, although this may be spread out over a number of visits to allow the gums to heal between visits.

This procedure can introduce bacteria into the bloodstream. Precautions should be taken to treat gum disease in people who are at increased risk of infection.
